MicType for iPhone — Privacy Policy

MicType is a voice keyboard that runs on your own AI. Core principle: your voice and text belong to you, and they never pass through us.

  1. We collect no personal data, run no servers of our own, and do not track you. MicType has no accounts and no sign-in.
  2. Your provider, your key. To use MicType you connect OpenAI with an API key from your own account. Everything below goes directly from your device to OpenAI. We are not in the middle of it: MicType has no servers, and neither relays nor stores any of it.
  3. Voice. While you speak, your recording is streamed to OpenAI so your words can be recognised as you say them. When you stop, the same recording is sent once more, whole, so a second, more accurate transcript can be made; the app inserts the better of the two. If the connection fails, the app tells you so and nothing is inserted: there is no on-device recogniser, so dictation needs a network connection and your key (see 5).
  4. Text. The text you dictate, select or copy is sent to OpenAI, with the same key, so it can be polished or so a voice command can act on it. The terms in your vocabulary — the ones you added and the ones the app learned on your device — go along with it, so names are spelled correctly. When the keyboard appears, the app sends those terms and your language list to OpenAI as recognition hints (no audio), so recognition is ready the moment you tap the mic.
  5. Your consent, and how to withdraw it. Before anything is sent, the app shows a disclosure next to the button "Agree and Connect". It names what will leave the device — your recording while you speak and once more when you stop, and the text to be tidied — and where it goes. Nothing is sent until you tap that button. To withdraw, remove the API key in Settings → OpenAI; with no key, nothing leaves your device, and dictation is unavailable until a key is entered again.
  6. OpenAI's own terms apply. Because you supply your own key, OpenAI's collection and use of your audio and text is governed by its own privacy policy and terms. We recommend reading them before connecting. MicType is not a party to that relationship and receives nothing from it.
  7. Microphone. The microphone is captured only when you tap the record button; iOS shows the orange microphone indicator while a session is active; capture stops when the app is closed.
  8. Keyboard Full Access. Used to read the transcription result from the app (via the App Group) and to call OpenAI with your key. The keyboard does not record audio and does not upload keystrokes.
  9. Local storage. Your API key is stored in the device Keychain. Your input history stays on your device and is never synced or uploaded. Your vocabulary and what the app learns about the words and languages you use are stored on your device and leave it only as described in 4.
  10. Children. MicType is not directed to children and collects no data from anyone.

Changes

If this policy changes, we will update the effective date above. Material changes will be reflected in the app's release notes.
